Lyrics

The Scared and The Scarred

The Grey smoke, blew into their dreams
The Grey smoke, from a billion TV screens
Now the air is clear, I hear it's safe to breathe
But grey smoke still swirls around the dream

And there's nothing they can do tonight
And the ruthless know what darkness hides
So when tomorrow comes
It's there for all to see
How the scared and the scarred are just so easy to lead
Easy to misguide easy to read easy to bleed easy to deceive
Ready to despise ready to strike ready to fight ready to believe
Sow and reap those seeds

the Grey smoke blew from here to there
Into the head and the heart of someone who can't bear
That all the doors and the walls and the books and the chairs
and the cups and the dolls and the work and the tears
Is now dead grey smoke in the air

And there's nothing he can do tonight etc.

Most of his dreams he just can't remember
All of his nightmares he can't forget
Someone still breathes on his right shoulder
Someone still breathes but just in his head
Most of his dreams he just can't remember
All of his nightmares he can't forget
Someone still stirs when he rolls over
Someone still breathes...

So when tomorrow comes etc.

Marker Pen Scrawl

Frame what you do now so you can hang it on the wall
And write in a caption in your Marker Pen Srcawl
Write underneath it in your Marker Pen Scrawl

You see what I do
But you miss who I am
It's time for leaving
This has never been a part of my plan

A shaky tape of you shows you were once thirteen
With your hair tied back then, looking set to steal the scene
Looking set to steal the scene, and you say

You see what I did
But you miss who I am
It's time for leaving
This has never been a part of my plan

You saw them leave their lives on the cutting room floor
Pick out some good scenes then pretend there's no more
But you say

You see all I do
Still you miss who I am
It's time for leaving
This has never been a part of my plan

Take a shot of you now, while you're in free fall
With your hair blown back now, your spectators so small
No need to write underneath it in your marker pen scrawl

Our Window

Laugh if you want to / And cry if you must
Hide it away if you think it's best / You know I am easily crushed

As you look at the things they've made / Look at the big parade of

Your misplaced life / Walk straight past our window
Possible life / Just outside our window
Your misplaced life / Go straight past our window

I weigh what you gave up / Against what I kept
Though I know you don't think that way / Won't dwell on what we have got left

As you look at the things they've made etc.

But when you're old and grey / Will you think you threw it all away
When you took my hand one day / When we walked the other way

So laugh if you want to / And cry if you must
Hide it away if you think it's best / You know I am easily crushed

When I get delusions

If I had disciples / I would make it twelve
Enough to form some factions / To fight among themselves
And if I worshipped someone / I would be his son
And tell it like I saw it / In front of everyone

If I ruled a country / I would want the bomb
They talk about democracy / But only listen to the strong
I'd sit there in my bunker / Righting all the wrongs
And people would be happy / Or I'd wipe out everyone

But please don't say you won't come out to play
Ignore what I say and come out to play
Please don't say I shouldn't think in this way
Forget what I say and come out to play

When I get delusions / They always turn out grand
But I'd like to take you with me / If you'll hold on to my hand
And though it is a fiction / I know you'll understand
When I ask you before take-off / To keep your eyes shut till we land

But please don't say etc.

So sign up as a disciple / There's only room for twelve
And settle into a faction / To fight among yourselves
Because you will find me sometimes / Thinking I'm someone's son
And telling it like I saw it / In front of everyone

Is this today?

His home for his whole life destroyed by the storm
He says: what's up with this weather why is it so warm?

Please tell me: is this today, or is this the future?
I can't tell these things apart anymore

The sea is epoxy, a grey shade of green
And he stands in those waves right up to his knees

Please tell me etc.

We sit by the sunset, at the end of their day
They've seen the predictions, but they say we're OK

Is this today, or is this our future?
I can't tell these things apart anymore

Watch

Watch, and the world washes over you
the news hits hard but misses you
and everything's a distant glow

You can't stop thinking that you're going to need this stuff
You can't stop thinking that it's getting all to much
You can't stop thinking
You can't stop thinking

Watch, they're trying to get a hold of you
(when I say you I mean me / I'm careless like that you see)
engaging you is what they do
is it going in or going through?

You can't stop thinking that you've seen it all before
You can't stop thinking that it's someone else's war
You can't stop thinking
You can't stop thinking

He thinks of the sixties

Peter Pan grew up I guess he was bound to
and though he was there then can't remember the count down
though and old TV blared through the warm summer air
can't remember those first steps can't remember the splash down
once he was sure, now the past is all hazy
those Washington marches and the soldiers gone crazy
Peter Pan grew up and decided the world
decided the world didn't need changing

And now he thinks of the sixties when he's getting the dope down
from the jar on the high shelf away from the children
he thinks of the sixties when he's getting the dope down
from the jar on the high shelf away from the children

Peter Pan stayed home but he still got the nightmares
where he's slippin and he's fallin as he runs for the choppers
twenty years later and he tries to ignore it
when he sees with his own eyes on the Cable News Network
that the sixties grew up and they sent their kids fighting
not for dominos fallin but the oil price rising

And now he thinks etc.

Thinks he was lost for those Memphis shots
knows that he cried for some man that died

Peter Pan grew up can't remember the flowers
that he took from her long hair tried to give to the soldiers
Peter Pan grew up remembers the mud though
how it stained everything how it dried like a cast so
Peter Pan grew up and decided the world
decided the world didn't need changing

Took

I just see shadows
So I took you for your eyes
You could see so clearly
Could see the stitches in the lies
(and) you had those beautiful eyes
all of the blue and the grey from a twilight time

There was fear of rejection
The usual immune suppression
Long months spent in recuperation
Same pain for the taker and the taken
in

I just hear echoes
So I took you for your ear
You could hear the magic
in the silence others fear
But here you hear the same old things
But when You choose what you loose you can't listen to them

There was fear of rejection etc.

And you can go to your doctors
And tell them what I stole
Just don't you go pretending
That you ever came here whole
No don't you go pretending
'cause not one of us is whole

I just feel past wounds
So I took you for your heart
But you knew that was coming
You knew it from the start

With fear of rejection
The usual immune suppression
Long months spent in recuperation
Same gain for the taker and the taken
in

It’s only me

it's only me
but somehow
that makes you happy
and you say it's only you
so like always I say
you'll do
you'll do
you'll
do

you | keep | me | on | the | tracks | as | the | mad | ness | comes | back

it's only TV
and two glasses
of wine
this cloud it hangs above us
but you say we're gonna be
just fine
just
fine

it's only a walk
in the
wind and the rain
but somehow
you're still smiling
and you say we're gonna be OK
OK

Baby thinks

Baby thinks he is the chosen one
We saw the numbers and we know he's wrong
He's got the father and he is the son
He gets religion just in time to run

He says he's coming for me
Cause I can not agree
He says there's only two sides
He says there's no where to hide
From him

The court appointed leader of the free world
The brave crusader with his mighty sword
The crooked oilman on the crooked board
The straight talker with his mangled words

He says he's coming for me etc.

Baby says you're with us or against us
He's got the taste now and he will use force
Against any enemies he sees
You're an enemy now if you do not agree

He says he's coming for me etc.

  1. [...] Finally got the web stuff kinda working, so picked up a guitar and tried to work out some music for Took (the only song I haven’t got music for), got some chords maybe for the verse… or maybe not. [...]
