Reviews at Get Ready to Rock and Dukester http://ccalam.com/?p=46 http://ccalam.com/?p=46#comments Mon, 20 Aug 2007 07:57:48 +0000 ccalam http://www.burbleland.com/ccalam/?p=46 Two new reviews (not that I have been desperately googling myself or anything):

  • Get Ready to ROCK: an introspective space cowboy version of Nick Drake perhaps, who probably took a puff and then started recording his jumbled thoughts…. And jumbled and eclectic as they may be, there is undoubtedly an inner strand to the ccalam’s narrative…. one part the work of a meandering colourful wordsmith and another part a synth driven musical melange.
  • Dukester (you might need to scroll down a bit as they put the newest reviews at the top): like an lone troubadour whose then been remixed by NIN or Depeche Mode, except its him doing it all with his own vision. Sometimes he’s on acoustic, sometimes its goddamn electric. Singing whats on his mind. The tunes and the sound are there. Truly. On radio he’d be a star.

Two new reviews! http://ccalam.com/?p=45 http://ccalam.com/?p=45#comments Fri, 27 Jul 2007 13:49:11 +0000 ccalam http://www.burbleland.com/ccalam/?p=45 Two new reviews of “Watch” are out! The first is a detailed, musically focused look at the album by imasadlittleboy. You can read the track by track analysis here. Check out his other reviews while you’re there (mostly of big label acts) – interesting views. His favourite track of the album seems to be “He thinks of the Sixties”:

the song opens with a very simple sounding guitar before a second one follows and the vocals again take a Buckley-esque feel …. The lyrics are again wonderfully crafted together to create a song with a real head nodding feel to it, and this is possibly the AAA song from the album. The song just again has some sort of wonderful charm which keeps hooked from start to end, and makes you want to stick the track on repeat.

The second is in August’s Sound on Sound (“The World’s Best Recording Magazine” with a circulation of around 40,000 copies!). It starts off like this:

C Calam has produced a beautifully packaged debut album, and you get the impression that an equal amount of hard work has been expended on the music. That work has paid off in many areas, most notably the synth programming, which yields dense arrangements brimming with imaginative sounds and textures.

Before plunging into the details of the mixing (well, it is a recording magazine). You can read the whole thing online here.

PS: The same reviewer said this about the next CD he reviewed: “There’s a throwing-the-dummy-out-of-the-pram quality to [the] music that begins to grate fairly quickly, and the lyrics offer empty, angst-rock cliche rather than telling detail or fresh observation”. So I think I got off pretty lightly with just a bit of critisism of the mix!

CD Review by Bad http://ccalam.com/?p=41 http://ccalam.com/?p=41#comments Fri, 08 Jun 2007 15:07:40 +0000 ccalam http://www.burbleland.com/ccalam/?p=41 There’s a new review of the CD by Bad – read it here in the original French.

Here is a rough translation into English:

I had already discovered CCALAM, artist English/Greek/Burmese composer, author, at the time of his invitation on myspace.

The influences of the young man: Beck, Billy Bragg, Boards of Canada, J J Fix, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Julian Cope, Kevin Coyne, The Cure, Miles Davis, Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, Fischer Z, Peter Gabriel, Lamb, Massive Attack, Jimmy Page, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Lou Reed, Sigur Ros, Sufjan Stevens, They Might Be Giants, Tom Waits, Neil Young.

How thus all that went was going to give in a shaker? Thus the nice postman deposited me the album in my letter-box! My ears were impatient to hear this opus of 11 titles, was I going to be allured? and the answer was without call large yes!

First of all the voice of CCALAM is generally soft, enveloping and warm, sometimes it is done more profound and malefic (“Watch” i.e), the texts are like small tales of the ordinary madness of our lives. CCALAM knew to combine all its influences with its own leg. It is rich musicalement all in subtle keys , without pretentious ornaments or of superfluous fuss. Personally, I find that it is a tasty cocktail between Radiohead, Massive, Lou Reed and Beck. It makes us travel throug throbbing, planing, and the urban road movie.

The album is built in the continuation of the pieces, I listened to it in loop several times, yes I know… une compulsive greedy and really this album is held, without rupture, with a pleasant fluidity and envoûtante. Of course I have blows of heart on the album like “Watch”, “He thinks of the sixties”, “Baby Thinks”. I leave you his myspace link which you will discover his universe and which can order its album! I say it to you it will be necessary to count on Portugal in the pop music because frankly this album is quite simply a jewel!

The CD… http://ccalam.com/?p=38 http://ccalam.com/?p=38#comments Sat, 21 Apr 2007 13:56:38 +0000 ccalam http://www.burbleland.com/ccalam/?p=38 I haven’t written much here for a while, but yesterday I sent the masters for the new CD off to the replication people… it’s DONE!

Now I have to wait a few weeks for them to be made. The tracks are also on their way to iTunes, but that takes even longer than getting physical CDs made.

Newly scared and scarred http://ccalam.com/?p=36 http://ccalam.com/?p=36#comments Wed, 13 Sep 2006 13:22:13 +0000 ccalam http://www.burbleland.com/ccalam/?p=36 Thanks to substudio there is a new version of “The Scared and Scarred” up. He took the time to edit the song into a better structure and inspired me to go back and redo it to fit the structure he came up with.

He also improved the sound, but unfortunately I haven’t been able to manage to get my new version to sound as good as the editted version he did…the guy’s a genius.

Tried a google adword experiment http://ccalam.com/?p=34 http://ccalam.com/?p=34#comments Mon, 28 Aug 2006 13:22:02 +0000 ccalam http://burbleland.com/ccalam/?p=34 Tried a bit of an experiment with advertising on google. My idea was to
pick a few musicians I liked and have my ads come up when people searched
for them. I tried doing the searches and not many ads came up, so I figured
it would be pretty cheap, £0.05 per click maybe? In that case if I could break
even selling an album every 100 clicks or so. Hmm… not likely, but seemed
worth a shot anyway to see what would happen.

So I set it up – there’s a £5 upfront payment, but after that you only pay
for the clicks, so that didn’t seem so bad.

Well I picked some slightly popular people and some pretty obsure ones as keywords
and for some reason £0.06 was the lowest I could go on any of them. I also
wrote a dumb ad: “ccalam – new album” and set it goingi on Saturday night.

By the next day there had been 150 impressions or so and no clicks. Some
of the more popular keywords went inactive – because no one was clicking
Google had decided my ads were not high enough quality and so would need
more money per click in order to go on showing them for those keywords. Fair
enough – I put the per click I was prepared to pay up to £0.11 and £0.17
as google suggested.

I also changed the ad to add a ‘call to action’ (another google suggestion),
so now it was “listen to ccalam”.

Later in the day I got a click! One whole click. But the person didn’t listen
- so much for calls to action. By then all the keywords were up to £0.17 – even
the ones that were very obscure (ie only 1 impression in the whole day) which
suprised me.

Over sunday night I had 3,555 impressions and one more click (again no listening),
but by the morining all the keywords were inactive – and needed £0.55 per click
to activate.

Looks like this strategy isn’t going to work – at least it only
cost me £5.34 to find out.
